Spoofer Ver 1.1

The Spoofer program is available but...

...the documentation isn't complete yet

Spoofer is a direct descendant of NewsSpoof - a program that tricked the DirecPC Personal News Server into talking to other computers on your LAN. While I pronounced NewsSpoof dead two years ago when I dropped my DirecPC service I found that with some modifications the program still came in handy at times.

New in Version 1.1

Version 1.1 is new as of 08/04/01.

  • The history of connections can optionally be written to the trace file and/or window.
  • A count of the number of connections will be displayed in the lower right hand corner of the Spoofer panel.
  • The word 'beta' has been removed from the About Spoofer Display.
  • The program has been compiled with Delphi 6.

What is Spoofer?

Simply stated it's a program that listens for IP data packets on one port and sends them out on a different port. The packets can be forwarded to an application running on the same computer as Spoofer or any other computer that can be accessed by IP address or host name.

How does it differ from NewsSpoof?

  • Both the input (listen) and output (forward) IP ports are user definable. The port numbers were fixed in NewsSpoof.
  • The host to which packets will be forwarded is user definable.
  • Data flowing through Spoofer can be logged to the display or to a file.
  • Spoofer can be minimized to the system tray or task bar.
  • Multiple copies of Spoofer can be run simultaneously by specifying the name of the .INI file each instance should use.
  • An obscure bug that caused a program error when using Outlook Express 4.0 has been fixed.
  • Several errors in setting the activity LEDS have been fixed.

Are there any limitations?

Of course there are!

  • Only one connection through Spoofer can be active at a time. This limitation is likely to be permanent. Also, there is no check in the program for attempts to establish multiple simultaneous sessions.
  • If tracing to a file the name of the output file is fixed.

Spoofer will be unsupported freeware. I wrote it for my own use and it's now running in 24/7 on my home LAN. No further enhancements are planned but I am open to ideas. If any major problems are uncovered I will try to fix them as time allows.

Necessary legal disclaimer: USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. NO GUARANTEES. YOUR MILEAGE MAY VARY. Actually I will make one guarantee. There is nothing in Spoofer that reports any info back to me or to any other entity concerning usage or anything else. There are no hidden features. Too bad some major software companies can't make that statement!

If the above hasn't frightened you click on the Download link on the left side of this screen. I'll post the documentation as I get it done so check back soon.
