Morrow Disk Jockey 2D Dual Floppy System

This is a double density (single sided) floppy system that uses 8 inch diskettes. It can read and write single density diskettes also. Single density operation was important since single density diskettes were the only truly universal standard for floppy diskettes. Most software was distributed on single density diskettes.

The Morrow system supports sector sizes of 128, 256, 512, and 1024 bytes per sector. When using 512 byte sectors each diskette can hold about 500kb of data. Imagine... with the two drives that was 1MB online simultaneously!

The controller card uses memory mapped I/O and has an onboard PROM used to boot up the system. The PROM also contains routines that provide a 'high level' interface for diskette I/O. There's 1KB of on board RAM - useful for buffering disk data. There's auto-jump circuitry on the board that will automatically boot from diskette when the computer is powered on (this system uses the autojump circuitry on the CPU board, not the diskette controller). Finally there is a serial port on this card that supports both RS-232C and 20ma current loop devices at baud rates up to 19.2kb.

Also included with the Disk Jockey 2D system:

  • All documentation: user's guide, programmer's guide, theory of operation, and logic diagrams.
  • The software that originally came with the system:
    • The Disk/ATE operating system and user's guide.
    • VBasic, the bundled basic interpreter.
  • A copy of CP/M 2.2 ready to run on this system on double density 512 byte diskette. The system is configured to run using an ADM-3 terminal attached to the 3P+S serial port. The CBIOS also contains support for a modem attached to the diskette controller serial port, the VIO-X video card, and a printer attached to the 3P+S parallel port (note: you'll have to build your own printer cable).
  • A quick start guide I've written that will introduce you to system start-up and some of the unique commands that are used (i.e. to format a diskette, switch disk drive density).
  • Full source code for the CBIOS used by the system plus directions on how to 'Sysgen' new versions of CP/M
  • Heck, I'll even through in some blank 8" diskettes!
While the Disk Jockey 2D is an 'optional' part of the package it is crucial if you want a complete running system!
